Technican: Hello, Consider having the starter tested for the amount of amps it is drawing from the battery to operate. Excessive amp draw (usually a good starter draws 175 amps or less) might be the cause. Ask a national chain parts store in your area if they will perform this STARTER AMP DRAW test for you. They may do it for free and you'll be in the right place if you need a starter. Owner: I have replaced the starter relay "Again" and it still does not work. i am not recieving the required 12v at the relay when the ignition is turned on. I now need a schematic of detail to chase this down- I guess the ignition switch could not be allowing the 12v to pass- But is there a neutral switch in this circuit as well? I checked a chiltons but the skin was not detailed enough. Technican: Auto or manual tranny? I'll get a schematic for your truck from the Mitchell I Data Base and describe it to you as best I can.
There is a neutral switch on an auto trans. so the truck starts only in PARK or NEUTR. On a manual trans., the switch is on the clutch pedal mount bracket and is actuated when the clutch is pressed to the floor. Owner: Automatic Tranny. I tested the 12 volt wire to the relay using a voltmeter and holding the ingnition in the start positon. Upon doing this i recieved about 1v at the relay wire- I also casued some wires to smoke under the dash. they acutally melted. they are located by the fuse box but are independent with a plug over them??? Can i send you a picture? Thanks John Technican: I should be able to get the diagram for your truck tomorrow so we can see what's up. Can you tell what the color code for these melted wires was?
I've never received a picture through before. Policy is not to post my e-mail addy for privacy reasons. Send it to and ask to forward it to me. I hope he will. Ask him to edit out your e-mail addy as well to protect your privacy, too.
You've got a bad short to fix. Let's give it a shot. Owner: Yes- the particular wires that melted were pink. the wire terminating at the starter relay carrying the 12volts to energize relay is red and i think white.
I understand the privacy thing. I have no problem giving you my email address on msn.com- as a suggestion if you have a generic account like iwon.com or something that i could send you information to this is private and anonymous and disposable if you want. Per your suggestion i can try to send to admin if necessary. Your call ! -I think if i can get an accurate diagram i can whip this thing. Thanks again! John Technican: John, I can't post an e-mail addy because there are those that will abuse it and ask for help outside the site.
I'm no celebrity and I know this. But, can you imagine on the world wide web how this could get crazy? When I'm in a parts store, people will ask for "how to" advice...well enough of that-
Back to you today, I'm headed for the schematic. Do you have a fax number?? Owner: I totally understand...
Fax number is 330-479-4000
thanks Technican: John, I have sent the fax. If you'll note on the Fig. 6: Fuse Block (Grids 20-23) the pink wires run from the ignition switch to the clutch triple function switch. And these pink wires are hot only in "START" position of the ignition switch.
