1999 Ford Ranger Making Noise - Electrical & Lighting Systems

Question: Driving along and I hear a "CHIME" for five tones which repeats five times (Total = 25 Chimes). Depending on how long I have the vehicle running this will continue to happen, even sitting at a traffic light. We all wear our seat belts and no doors are ajar. What could it be? The vehicle has 182, 000 miles on it and has been an excellent truck!

Technican: The answer is your air bag warning light bulb is not working. The vehicle has no way of visually getting your attention by flashing or leaving the air bag warning light on, so it chimes to get your attention. You may have an air bag problem and/or you may just need a light bulb. The most common failure of the air bag system is the clock spring under the steering column air bag has an open circuit. You'll need a scanner or code reader to see what code has been recorded. I recommend the skills of a professional for this repair unless you are tooled and trained to handle air bag deployment components.

Owner: , I 'finally' got to tear into the dash and get at the bulb in question. This DID resolve my issue although it wasn't easy getting the instrument cluster out. Information for others: I went ahead and replaced L 12 mini bulbs and L 6 intermediate bulbs to reduce having this issue again anytime soon. Plus I saved the old bulbs for spares.
