1988 Ford Taurus Stalling - Ignition System
Question: Hi, I have a question about a Ford Taurus. Sometimes it runs and at other times cuts out and quits, not sure if it's electrical or fuel. The distributor was taken out to check and then put back in. Now the car doesn't want to start, just pops around. Is it possible to put the distributor in wrong? Do the gears have to mess again in the same way it came out? Can it be adjusted only by turning the distributor after its in? I would be grateful for any advice you could offer, thanks
Wayne

Technican: Yes, it clearly appears to be installed wrong. Strong chance the plug wires are on incorrectly.
email me and I'll send you a diagram Owner: The plug wires were never removed from the distributor cap. What I don't know is if the distributor shaft can be put in wrong or if however it fits is the way it goes. Technican: Not sure which engine you have. Probably the 3.0L. I can tell you how to check. If you With number one cylinder at top dead center of compression stroke, the rotor should point to the number one tower on the distributor cap. If it's about 180 degrees off the distributor needs to be pulled and turned half a revolution and reinstalled.
The number one cyl is on the passenger side/ firewall side.
If you have a timing light you can see if the light flashes on the timing scale as engine is cranked.
