Technican: Hello, For research purposes what engine do you have, please? What series Taurus?
Owner: I have a Ford Taurus 3.0 L Station Wagon GL ( not an SHO ), 1989 I did a test on the battery voltage, without engine on it is about 11.5-12.0 volts. With engine on it reached about 14.2 volts. I had not used the car for 2 months, I started it and immediately battery check came on. I ignored for a few days, and it totally wouldn't start. So I changed the battery, and still the battery check is on, although car starts first crank. What should I check? Are there any good mechanics in Houston whowould rebuild the alternator brushes for cost+labor?
Technican: Thank you for the reply. I'll now be able to researech your specific charging system. Are the battery connections clean and tight? Have you checked all your fuses? Your local national auto parts chain store has a test they can perform on the car to see how powerful your alternator is charging with the engine running. This test is usually free of charge to you but please call ahead to confirm to eliminate surprise. 14.2 Volts indicates the alternator does output voltage but it takes amps to charge a battery. You might see 14.2 volts but have only a few amps being produced..perhaps too few amps to run the car and also charge the battery at the same time. Purchasing a fully guarnteed rebuilt alternator is better than having yours overhauled. The auto parts store can sell you one that every part of it is guarnteed instead of just what a mechanic would replace to restore full output. If you can replace the alternator (if it is needed) then you'll save the labor charges of an overhaul. Taking your car to a shop means you pay mark-up on the parts and of course all labor and fees. I have no knowledge of repair shops in Houston. If you must take your car to someone for repairs that you can't do, consider SEARS. I'd start with the charging system test (for free) at a national auto parts chain store and decide the next move based on your findings.
