1993 Ford Taurus Lagging - Fuel System
Question: Took a short trip recently in my 93 ford taurus, on the interstate doing 65, after going only 3 or 4 miles the car starts to lose power. The speedometer starts dropping and the only way to pick up speed is to take foot completely off accelerator and then press it again. In an 80 mile trip I had to repeat this process about 15 to 20 times. Also each time I exited highway the car tried to die when I stopped at end of exit.I have been told fuel filter or fuel pump is the problem....What do you think?

Technican: Hello, How long (in miles) since you had the fuel filter replaced? Have you had the fuel pump pressure checked? Fuel supply is a prime suspect for the condition you've described.
If the fuel filter is getting plugged-up of course the engine cannot get the full supply needed. Low pump pressure would have the same effect as a restricted fuel filter--car acts like it is running out of gas. In fact it is (if the restriction or low pressure is the case).
There is another fuel filter on the fuel pick-up line inside the fuel tank that if dirty enough will be sucked flat by the fuel pump. However, it would not resume flow by letting off the accelerator. If the engine stopped, this filter would expand toward original shape and allow fuel flow until sucked flat again. It looks like a test tube and is nylon screen mesh.
