1994 Ford Taurus Lagging - Drive Train & Driveline
Question: When breaking there is a kind of a lurch and when speeding up it doesn't want to shift up for quite a while. Along with this, the speedometer began wavering and then quit. Also, the break lights and turn signal lights went out but it was just a coincidence because it was only the bulbs since replacing those fixed them. All of the fuses were/are fine.
We've gotten different answers from different people(Ford dealership, Transmission shop(s), general mechanic (they fixed the bulbs). Some even wanted to say that all of those problems were connected. ??? Help...before we get taken to the cleaners by some unscrupulous mechanic.

Owner: One automatic transmission guy used a diagnostics tool that said, among other ambiguous things that the alternator was putting out too much voltage. He couldn't understand why the fuses hadn't blown. ???It was his opinion that it needed to go to an auto electric guy. ??? Just wanted to add this info for what it might be worth. Owner: Why is my question listed as paying $5 when I entered $10? Technican: Have the engine mounts checked and the transmission mounts checked.
The speedometer problem can be traced back to the pick up in the transmission
itself.
The gear at that point, or the drive line for the speedometer is defective. In a sense, the problems, minus the lamps, are related.
However, only by virtue of the problems as described.
The lurch could be transmission engagement problems, as well as the shifting issue. The mounts need to be checked as well as transmission fluid and the filter in the
transmission.
A dealership is the last place I would take a car.
General mechanics can be a better choice, IF the mechanic really knows what he is
doing.
Dealerships are out to get as much money as they can, since part of their pay is by commissions. These people expect you to not know anything, therefore they can soak you for as much as they can.
Find a good independent repair shop that has a good reputation, and is listed with the
BBB. Owner: In the first place, the car is a 1995 Taurus, not 94.
My daughter took it to Mr. Transmission in Athens, GA. He has checked it superficially and fixed the speedometer (I don't remember what he told her it was) but the 'lurching' and gear changes on acceleration, he says, is internal and sounds like something's either broken or trying to break and he will have to get into it. While he does that, he says he will clean it really good, etc. He's citing $398 at this point for the speedometer fix, breaking it down and cleaning it, fluid checks, and putting it back together after any other repairs are done. Of course, there will be additional cost based on what he finds inside. What do you think? Here's How To Get Guaranteed Solutions In Minutes
