1995 Ford Taurus Failing - Engine

Question: I own a ford Taurus station wagon 1995 with 111000 miles. When I bought the car the prevous ower told me that the car stopped twince in hot weather but after bringing it to a meachinic they were aneble to fix the problem. However it happened it to me as well. During hot-warm day driving in state roads after some miles the engin start to fail and then it stops. It seems like there is no gas, but there is gas in the tank. Eventually teh car stops and if I try to turn it on it give some signs and then eventually dyes again. However if I leave it stop for few hours it starts again as nothing happened and I can drive. When the weather is mild-cold it runs wonderfully

Technican: First off, you tell me the vehicle dies when in inclimate weather. It starts again when the vehicle cools down. Several factors come to mind and each would require me to do a diagnostic scan of the operating system to try and pinpoint. There are several sensors on your vehicle that could be the cause of your problem(MAF, TPS, O2, BMAP etc.)if any of these are sending an errant code to the ECM, it will cause engine shut down.Take it to a shop that has computerized diagnostic equipment to get any codes that may be relayed or stored in the ECM to help pin down the source.Check with some of your local parts houses. Some are offering this service for free or at a nominal charge. If a code or codes are retrieved, the flow charts that pertain to those codes needs to be followed all the way through to assure a proper repair. Paul
Owner: Thank you for your reply. I have some doubts, which I would like to tell you. When I went the first time they told me that a possible problem could be the gas pump, which is in this model in the tank, and to avoid such problem to keep always more than half tank full (so the pump is always fully submerged and then will not overheat). Do you think that this is reasonable and that keeping the pump always submerge may fix the problem? The same mechanich suggested "gasoline vaporisation" namely that the gasoline instead to remain liquid because of the heat may vaporize and so less mass (at some pressure) would be send in the engine. I had trouble with that and I would like to hear your opinion. Thank you very much
Technican: Yes, you could have a "vapor lock", and yes the pump is located in the tank. In my years of working at a Ford dealership, I have seen on occasion where the pump will fail if the level is allowed to go too long once a check fuel light comes on.(tank at this point usually has a minimum of 5 gals.)I would still do a diagnostic scan before trying going any further. Good Lucl, Paul
Owner: Dear Paul, thank you very much for your informative answers. I have one question. The broke down happened last summer (more than 6 months ago) and at that time I went to the mechanic but I do not know if they did a diagnostic test. However, if I go this coming week asking for a diagnostic test can they still retrieve the information? How long after the event should a diagnostic test be done? Thanking for your help I would like to wish you a very nice week end Thank you Daniele
Technican: If the repair facility has the proper equipment and a knowledable technician, any code past or present sent to the ECM can be retrieved. When repairs are done with a scanner, the code is supposed to be reset(erased)manually with the scanner.Much like your couputer, when you delete a file, its still on yur hard drive and the right computer geek can find all or parts of it.I've found that old codes(files)tell a good story of the vehicles past repairs. Also, if the previous owner ever had the vehicle serviced at a Ford dealersihp(warranty work, oil change etc)I'm not certain but I know when I worked for them some years back, I could enter your vehicle VIN# and get a past history this way too.I'm pretty much old school when it comes to repairs:things of the past supply knowledge that help insure the same mistake is not repeated.I hope your weekend and year are not hamperd with further problems. Paul
