1996 Ford Taurus Failing - Heating & Cooling System

Question: weve taken car to firestone & ford repair shops. they say they have flushed numerous times, changed heater core more than once, changed radiator, changed thermostat. each time we get car back, heater works for about 5 minutes, then is cold again.we had the car at firestone 6 times to no avail. they told us to take to ford &they would pay. took to ford twice. they said to much corrosion. didnt fix & charged 1500.00 to firestone. any suggestions on repairing car. thanks

Technican: I am amazed that Firestone would pay a Ford Dealership $1500.00 after all their own efforts (at your expence) and not have your car repaired to your satisfaction. Does Firestone know your heater isn't working? They won't help you wrestle the Ford shop? That smacks of Firestone spending $1500.00 to make you go away under the demise of "good will". They should help you fight Ford to ensure everyone involved is satisfied. I'd be in an attorney's office if I were in your position or even Firestone's for that matter. They spent money to satisfy their customer (you) and you need to get serious about the recourse paths available. With Firestone and with Ford. Material and workmanship are guarnteed by retail shops. The only suggestion I have is that the air in the cooling may not have been bled out. Air can get trapped in a heater core and only the heater core flow would be effected. Cooling system flow everywhere else would be fine and the engine would not overheat. Your thoughts?,
Owner: , if i understand you, youre saying if there is to much corrosion as ford claims, the car would overheat ? we are having no problem whatsoever with overheating. we will contact firestone tomorrow. i also learned the second time my wife went to ford, one of the men there told her the car was junk and she should sell it and not let buyer know about the heating problem. kind of unethical for a ford employee wouldnt you think ? thanks for your information
Technican: The heater core is a small radiator. It's capacity is maybe a quart. The physical size of the pipes that carry the coolant flow are quite narrow and will easily stop up on the inlet end with anything but coolant. It will act as though it were a sediment filter for the cooling system. No flow, no heat. The engine does not rely on the heater core for cooling so if it stops up the engine will not overheat but the heater becomes ineffective. What flows through the radiators' larger pipes can get caught in the inlet of the heater cores' smaller pipes. Flushing the cooling system with a flush product and PRESSURE is the best way to get the corrosion out. Flushing requires extra time and effort to get a system badly effected by corrosion clean enough to perform again. Backflushing the heater core by itself will clear the "trapped junk" out and not allow repeating the engine cooling system contamination. This frustrating cycle of events is frustrating for everyone. Enough money has been spent on this car that results should have come about. All said and done, bleeding the air out of the cooling system is critical for the heater to work. Be firm where needed. You deserve a reliable repair or your money back. The unethical remarks made by Ford sounds like the voice of inexperience to me. Good grief, an engine from a salvage car could have been installed in your car for near the money that has been invested so far.
