1996 Ford Taurus Malfunction - Drive Train & Driveline
Question: My wife's 96 Taurus is bleeding my wallet dry. We've put brakes all the way around it twice in 2 years. I just spent $700 for new rims because the tires kept going flat, something about the rims "going bad"? And 4 new tires within the last 3 months, and its due for a timing belt. Now, on my way home from work with it last Friday the transmission seemed to stick when I first took off from my parking spot, then it felt like it bound up coming to a stop. I work only 4 miles from home and on the way the O/D light started blinking. So Saturday morning I went to take it to the local garage, less than 1 mile away, the car barely moved under its own power. Mechanic says the tranny is shot. $1775 to rebuild it. This car is almost 10 years old, just about 200K miles, with a rebuilt engine @ 85K miles. Should I scrap the car? I hear this year was bad for Transmission problems? We're trying to buy our first home within the next month, I just bought a new 2005 500 and not sure I want to spend another $20K on a new car, but not sure I want to sink more $ into this old one. Should I get a 2nd opinion on the tranny? Or does this sound like it's dead?"

Technican: Sure sounds like it could be dead. I suppose a transmission shop will give you a second opinion for under $100. There are some electronic items that can cause such problems. There are other options besides new cars.... I do not think I would recommend a transmission in this car with such milage on it. Here's How To Get Guaranteed Solutions In Minutes
