1996 Ford Taurus Malfunction - Electrical & Lighting Systems
Question: My speedometer stops working while I'm driving and then I sometimes feel loss of the power steering.
and then the service engine light goes on. And then the next day it works just fine. And sometimes just after it happens it comes back....My mechanic thinks it's a speed sensor. I asked a ford dealership what it might be, and he said could also, be a multifunction swith. Would anyone happen to know what causes that...thank you Jim

Technican: If you have an Autozone nearby they will read the trouble codes from your car's PCM(computer). It is a free service, if the speed sensor stops working it will set a code. Owner: I failed to mention, my mechanic, has read it on a scanner and it did show up to be a speed sensor. But, before we change that I want to know if anyone would be able to tell me the difference between the speed sensor and the multifunction switch. I called a Ford dealer, and he said my problem indicates it could be either one. In each case it would cost about $150.00 to $200.00 in each case. He could tell me it's both and I wouldn't know the difference. Is their anything distinct, that would set one from the other apart? My mechanic, never heard of a "Multifunction Switch". So, I have doubts if he's going to be on the button with this one.
Thank you,
JIM Technican: The "Multifunction Switch" is the turn signal selector, high to low beam switch, etc. It controls multiple devices so it been named a multifunction switch. I guess he has never heard it called by this name.
You can get a VSS (vehicle speed sensor) at Autozone for $25 or under. Have your mechanic install it or replace it yourself. Here's How To Get Guaranteed Solutions In Minutes
