1997 Ford Taurus Malfunction - Electrical & Lighting Systems
Question: Hello, I was driving my car and then the battery light came on and then after about half a day the abs light came on then the theft deterrent light came on and then went off. The AC went on and off as did the radio. Then while driving the car stalled then started up again 3 times then died completely and would not start again. I had it towed to a safe place and checked it out. Advice from friends suggest alternator, battery and a short in the electical system. I repalced the battery because it was old and the car started. I took it to AutoZone to check the Battery and alternator and they said they were both fine. How do i check to see if it is an electrical short or not and how do I fix it? Technican: Hello, you described a typical domino effect of a car trying to run on too little volts.
A bad battery will not take a charge from the alternator and it can even keep the alternator's voltage production from getting through to the car's systems.
We now know that the battery is new and the alternator is good. Electrical shorts blow fuses and trip circuit breakers. If that is not happening you have probably fixed your car.
You'll need an amp meter to test for excessive parasitic drains on the battery when your engine and key are OFF. The amp meter must handle 10 amps load without it's internal fuse blowing.
Please advise if you want to do this parasitic drain test and what aftermarket equipment your car has (alarms, phones, stereo CD players) if any.

Owner: Hello, It turns out that it was the pulley and the alternator that were faulty. Cost me $800 at the ford dealership to fix due to they were the only ones to be able to get to those parts on my particular engine. Thank you for trying though.
Technican: When you explained May 10th that AutoZone said your alternator was good I quit thinking it would go that way.
