1997 Ford Taurus Malfunction - Engine
Question: Hey, I have a Taurus SHO. I'm thinking there might be a problem with the PCM. The check engine light keeps coming on. Everytime it does, there is a different code from the Snap-On scanner. I'm a mechanic, yet I can't figure this one out. I've always just replaced the part that the scanner/computer said was malfunctioning. The CE light would go off, then come on a short time later with a different code/problem.
So far, I've been through 3 of 8 new ignition coil (CPP), a new EGR valve, new EGR valve sensor, new ECT sensor, 2 new alternators, a few relays, and now supposedly the IMRC is stuck open and there is a problem with the SAI circuit (low voltage). Do you think a PCM would take care of the problem? The car is awesome, but I'm ready to dump it and take a HUGE loss, unless someone can help me.
Thank you for ANY advice possible!!!!

Technican: Try and check the fuel tank cap.Fords are infamous for leakage here sending a false code to the ECM.You say Sanp-On scanner. The one I used to have allowed me to retrieve codes from the past even though they had been reset. This might help you by following the proper flow charts for any of the codes to see if the problem didn't come from the bottom of the hill.
Paul Owner: When you say the fuel tank cap, do you mean the cap where the filler neck comes up? And also, if I am able to look at the history of codes, what do you suggest I do? I'm not sure I understand what you are implying by starting at the bottom... Technican: It is the gas cap.If it is left loose or the seal is not good, air enters the"closed"system thus sending a false code to the ECM.As for the history codes, I've seen far too many techs stop in the flow chart and say the problem is resolved. The flow chart is a series of tests that should be completed to its fullest. When a tech starts(top)he goes through the suggested modes to try and pinpoint the problem. Some, when getting the "check engine" light to go off seem to feel the problem is resolved. If this is the case, old codes can reveal prior problems and help a true tech get to the real cause.(bottom)Sometimes the part at the bottom of the chain that does not reveal codes to the ECM causes those that do fail or send false/negative codes.
