Owner: We are having drivability problems. When we first take off the car shifts hard. This was the first time the check engine light came on with this code. Could this be a censor? Would this relate to the speed control censor? What other information do you need?
Owner: When first shifting the engine jumps and if the torque converter is stuck open then how do you fix this?
Technican: Hi Again; The torque converter is locked in. This means that your torque converter lock out solenoid has failed. Lockup Converter Testing All late-model automatic transmissions are equipped with lockup torque converters. The action of the lockup converter should be observed during a road test. Poor lockup action can be the result of: electrical problems, a malfunctioning lockup clutch assembly, an engine problem, or a problem in the torque converter itself. To properly diagnose lockup converter problems, you must understand their normal operation and the controls involved with the system. Although the actual controls of the lockup clutch assembly vary with the different manufacturers and models of transmissions, they all will have certain operating conditions that must be met before the lockup clutch can be engaged. The vehicle must be travelling at a certain speed before lockup will occur. The vehicle speed sensor sends this speed information to the computer. The converter clutch should not be able to engage when the engine is cold; therefore, a coolant temperature sensor provides the computer with information regarding temperature. During sudden deceleration or acceleration, the lockup clutch should be disengaged. One of the sensors used to tell the control computer when these driving modes are present is the throttle position sensor. Some transmissions use a third or fourth gear switch to signal to the computer when the transmission is in that gear and to allow for converter lockup. A brake switch is also used in some lockup circuits to disengage the clutch when the brakes are applied. Hope This will help.
Technican: Trouble Code: P1744 Vehicle Qualification: Ford Taurus Description: Torque Converter Clutch System Mechanically Stuck in Off Position thats what it means, since you didnt give many other details not sure what else to tell you, be happy to answer more completely if needed with more details
Technican: Hi; The code you are giving me is a torque converter clutch. Are you having driveablity problems? The code is stuck in the computer, But does not necessarily tell that you have a problem. Need more info before I can help. Thanks
Technican: Hi again; It sounds like you need to adjust the TV cable. It is located coming out of the firewall and going to the trans. The only way to adjust it, is to push down on the metal clip, looks like a horshoe and push the cable back into the firewall. If it shifts harder try pulling it back out. Once you get it to shift right, disconnect your battery for five minutes and reconnected again. Start it and put it in reverse while holding the brake for 2 minutes. DO NOT HIT THE ACCELERATOR DURING THIS TIME!!!!. The computer should relearn itself and al codes cleared. Try it and let me know. .
