1999 Ford Taurus Making Noise - Chassis, Suspension & Steering
Question: Just had the Rack/Pinion and Power Steering pump replaced since the rack leaked and the pump fried. Now even though the rack is fixed and the new pump has lots of fluid the pump is making a loud moaning noise when turning in either direction. It is more pronounced when sitting still or at low speeds but it almost sounds like the pump is sick. Note that the steering seems to be working fine, the pump is just really noisy (moaning sound).

Technican: Hi,
Ford products are well known to have noisy power steering pumps. Most likely the pump you now have is a rebuilt unit, I have had fresh rebuilds make that same noise. I prefer to use original Motorcraft parts to reduce this complaint. Try to get the current pump replaced under warranty since noise IS a valid complaint. The car IS NOT supposed to sound like this. Make sure there is no restrictions in the return line. Owner: Hi, Took the car back to the dealer and was told the noise should go down over the next week as any air works its way out of the system. Is this a valid answer? Technican: Usually it goes away in a day, but a week will not hurt anything, it will still be under warranty. Give it a try and see!
