1999 Ford Taurus Sticking - Drive Train & Driveline
Question: About a month ago the cruise-control stopped working. I didn't think anything of it until the "Service Engine Soon" light came on, the speedometer stopped working, and the shifting for the transmission became erratic and labored.
The shifting for the transmission is very hard from 1st to 2nd, . Once it catches, the other shifts are hard but do catch. Fluid level is okay.

Technican: I got some answers for you sweet and sour
first of all your cruise control is not that common of a problem and it is probly a vacume line or module that has gone out on the cruise control system, that can be determined by attaching the computer to the wiring harness and checking the codes.
this problem may be related to the transmission.
The check engine lightI believe is related to the three.
The speedometor is common for that car and year worst case scenario, it can be rebuilt I searched the internet and found several firms that will rebuild the speedometer and warranty the device for a year for about $100. Powl's Speedometer Service .
They fix 15-20 Ford Speedometers each week. Says ford did not lubricate the bearings properly when it was manufactured.
The transmission on the other hand is known for going out on the taurus as a last resort have a major tune ut done on the trans and that may clear up the shifting problem, if not then a rebuild would be in order or a used trannie, which I would not recommend for that car unless you know the historythe transmission.
I hope this helps" Owner: Do transmissions on the Ford Taurus go out after 65k miles on it?
I am kind of shy getting any transmission rebuilt. The last one I had lasted only two years. If I have five years into this car, is it worth it to rebuild the transmission? Technican: on the ford tauras the transmissions do go out prematurely
they are known for that at the least.
I would have it checked out first by a transmission shop to be sure it is beyond
a transmission tune up.
as far as a rebuild you would be better off with a new trans. Here's How To Get Guaranteed Solutions In Minutes
