2000 Ford Taurus Making Noise - Chassis, Suspension & Steering
Question: There is a rubbing/groaning sound in steering column. I feel the viberation through steering wheel. Happens first thing in am when turning as I back up and turn in either direction. More intense when colder weather is present. Not as noticable during subsequent trips as day goes on.

This condition is caused by Teflon sealing rings on the spool valve wearing grooves in the aluminum housing of the rack and pinion resulting in an internal bypass of pressure. Once the housing warms up, the metal will expand and reduce the pressure loss. The rack and pinion will soon need to be replaced. Technican: Did you recieve my answer about the rack and pinion?
