Owner: I have 4 speeds to control my blower motor. Speeds 1, 2, and 3 don't work. Speed #4 has worked but has since stopped working. Technican: It's more than likely the control head for the A/C on the dash. Can't count how many times we used to replace these when I worked at a Ford dealership. You say its' a '03, depending on when you bought it and mileage, it may still fall under your 3year 36, 000 mile warantty. Some dealers who have dedicated customers whose warantty may be a little over the coverage, may look the other way, its' worth the try if you frequent the dealer you purchased from.Otherwise, the part I speak of is a dealer only item.It is not too difficult for a novice to replace.
If the fan was opperating at all the relay pretty much is ruled out for me.The only other part that I would concider is the fan resistor. It is located on the blower motor housing under the hood.
Paul Owner: dear paul,
i'm not sure what you mean by the control head for the a/c on the dash. do you mean the control assembly that pulls out the dash that has the radio and switches on it? That must cost some money. i've already replaced the blower motor resistor asssembly and that did'nt do anything. please reply. thanks, scott Technican: The control head are the switches you use to control the temperatue, fan speed and blower modes on the dash.I've had to replace this on two of my own personal vehicles.Yes it sits bellow your radio but it is not attached to it.I think the last one I replaced was in the $50 range but that was a few years ago.The bezel that surrounds the radio and controls pulls off to reveal 4 screws that hold it into the dash. On the back of it there are disconects that just plug in.
Paul Owner: hey paul,
a new development has occurred. after the car has been running for 15 minutes the fan comes on and i have all the speeds and hot and cold! the funny thing is that when the heat is on, the air conditioner line gets frosted up and i can hear and feel a slight clicking noise in the line every 30 seconds or so. does this tell you anything new? turn the car off and it takes another 15 minutes for the fan to come on again. please reply. thanks, scott Technican: Is this vehicle equiped with climate control? The clicking you hear and feel is more than likely the compressor cycling in and out.The A/C is a heat exchange and functions when in a defrost mode.Try and turn the mode switch to MaxA/C then back to defrost. Also turn the tempeture dial from heat to cold and see what the reactions are.My'97 F150 acts up like this from time to time. When you here the clicking sound, look at the compressor to see if the clutch is if fact engaging. If it is, the control head is now becoming more suspect to me.
