1988 Ford Tempo Won't Start - Ignition System

Question: My 1988 Ford Tempo GL will not start. When I turn the key, it makes a horrible noise coming from in front/center/bottom of the engine. It whirrs and grinds for a couple seconds, but the engine never even gets close to turning over? It made a slight version of this sound a few times over the past couple weeks. Is that the starter or celunoid? Is it something I can replace myself? What should I expect to pay a mechanic, ballpark?

Technican: Your starter is not engaging the flywheel teeth. Make sure your battery and connections are good. Beyond that it's time to remove the starter. You should be able to do this yourself, if you have any experience turning wrenches. The least expensive starter you can buy will be between 40 and 50 dollars. To have a shop repair expect anywhere from 100-250 dollars. This depends on labor rates in your area, and the price of the starter they install (at one site I just checked the starter ranges from 44.95- 188.99). When the starter is removed the teeth on the flywheel should be inspected. If you email me I'll send you instructions on starter replacement. You can check most places on the internet(naponline.com, autozone.com, partsamerica.com, etc). Then call local shops and get a price quote to install the starter. Some shops won't do this, some will.
