Technican: The first thing you need to check is a for faulty spark plugs or wires then check for a vaccume leak. even a leak in the fuel system will bring those symtoms. it is possible that the burnt wire shorted out a wire connected to the emissions control system. the alternator would have nothing to do with your idle unless it a bad alternator and is not charging that would cause rough idle and maybe a shutdown when you turn on the headlights I hope this helps
