1990 Ford Thunderbird Failing - Heating & Cooling System

Question: I recently installed a new air compressor because the old one locked up. Now the compressor keeps kicking on and off. What could this be caused from? Needless to say the air still dosen't work. I used the vaccumn pump on it thinking this would correct it, but no luck. Please help me....My wife is ill and must have ac when in the car...

Technican: Hi; check your pressure. If it is cutting out at about 50lbs then most likely it will be the low pressure switch has gone bad. If the pressure drops lower than 30lbs then you don't have enough freon in it. .
Owner: I tried what you said, however it still doesn't work. The pressure seemed to build up, but I still don't get cool air. Could have I done something to the new compressor when I first drove it to see if it was fixed. That was before I knew it have to have a vaccum used on it. At any rate it made a loud noise and was smoking when I got back.
Technican: Hello, Have you converted the system to the R134a refridgerant? When you replaced the compressor did you replace the receiver/drier? How much oil did you put into or take out of the new compressor? Did you clean or replace the orifice tube and screen? The orifice tube is in the high pressure line prior to where the line enters the evaporator. Look for a small crimp in the line that keeps the "O" tube from moving too far toward the evaporator. BE SURE YOU GET THE "O" TUBE BACK IN THE LINE WITH THE SAME ORIENTATION AS IT CAME OUT. YOU DON'T WANT IT IN BACKWARDS! If you connect the gauges to the system and the compressor starts "short cycling" what is happening on the low pressure side gauge? Does it move rapidly toward zero? If it does then there is a restriction in the system that must be eliminated. It is usually the orifice tube screen and or the drier. However, I've had some systems so contaminated with debris from the failed compressor that even the condenser in front of the radiator had to be replaced. The condenser alone has over 80 feet of tubing and lots of places (180 degree bends) where debris can get stuck. How shall we start?,
