1992 Ford Thunderbird Malfunction - Drive Train & Driveline

Question: This car doesn't shift reliably and solidly into overdrive until 65-70mph. In addition, the automatic overdrive transmission can't decide if it wants to be in 3rd or overdrive, below the above speed and above about 30mph. This behavior just started, the transmission's shifting was smooth and unnoticable before that. It seems ok when overdrive is locked out ("D" on the selector). V6, 52k miles. Thanks!

Technican: hello I have reviewed your question and it seems you may have a common problem with your tranny first change the filter and fluid check the belly pan for metal shaving for future ref a small amout is normal wear if that does not solve it then there may be a problem with your control switch or interlock solenoid also check the vacume line going down to the transmission for leaks or disconnection
Owner: Hi, thanks for the diagnosis. A couple of questions related to your answer: 1.Where is the filter located and is it feasible that I, a reasonably competent do-it-yourselfer, change it out? 2. Where is the control switch/interlock solenoid located? 3. Where does the vacuum line to the transmission originate? (I'm guessing the throttle body) I will probably let a mechanic drop the belly pan for me to look for metal chips/shavings. Thanks again! Al Young
Technican: the filter is in the transmission it is considered a transmission tune up when change with fluid the control switch and interlock solenoid is located on either side of transmission it should be visible from inspection under car something you can do yourself it will have wires attached to it wiht a socket connector before entering into the transmission. and yes the vacume line is more likely located near the back of the throttle body going down firewall in rear wheel drive vehicles you are welcome Macconeck
