1992 Ford Thunderbird Other - Electrical & Lighting Systems

Question: After I drive a few minutes, the check engine light comes on for less than a minute, goes off for less than a minute, and repeats this over and over until I stop the car. Nothing seems to be wrong, it runs fine. Is this some kind of notice to get emissions checked or what? I just purchased the vehicle, and it has 58, 000 miles on it. Thanks Jim

Technican: sir as long as the check engine light is not steady, there is no problem that you can definately diagnose even when connected to the computer. the system can be reset but only to start up again as soon as you run the car for a few minutes. the only sure way to pin it is to wait until you get a steady light and then you will know that a componet is definately out and can be diagnosed." Owner: Are you saying that I really can do Nothing to stop this light or to diagnose the actual problem as long as the light is intermittent ? Is this a definite indication of a real problem beginning to develop, but is not there yet ? Can I reset this, or does it have to be reset by a mechanic ? If by a mechanic, what cost could I expect ? From what you said, it seems as if I would be wasting my time to take it in to a shop until the light is steady. This problem has been happening for more than 2 weeks now; is there a way to estimate how much longer before I get a steady light ? Is this car "crying wolf", or could a serious problem be developing while I am watching this cryptic light play this waiting game ? Thanks Jim

Technican: I am saying that with a lot of time and money anything can be fixed. you have something going out but there is no way of telling untill the problem is consistent. it could be a sensor beggining to go out or somewhere in the vacinity a major problem would not go in qand out, low oil or coolant or brake fluid will be constant a knock in the engine will send a constant signal if you take it to a shop now you can pay lots of money and yet the problem will not be found.you can reset it yourself by taking off the pos batt post for 30 seconds and replace it no one can say how long before the problem will cause a steady light.I say wait for the red light
